Patrik Fitzgerald / Motorpsycho with Jello Biafra — “Punch”
Patrik Fitzgerald is considered the godfather of folk punk. On this 7”, we find a newly recorded version of the original song Punch on side A, and a cover version performed by Motorpsycho + Jello Biafra (vocalist of Dead Kennedys).
Like many other punk bands, Patrik has strong political lyrics and wanted the cover art to be political as well. The song was originally written in 1980 and is about politicians looking out for their own interests. The cover is an interpretation of the lyrics, set in our time: Donald Trump, dressed in a diaper, pulling on a cloth (the American flag) while dragging a globe — our planet — along with him.
To keep the focus on the illustration, the cover design is executed with stickers placed on the plastic sleeve. Additionally, the print is laminated with a material that provides a tactile feel and the right contrast level to do the illustration justice. Inside, there is a longer text by Jello Biafra about the project and the musicians, including a visual reference to Biafra’s releases on the Alternative Tentacles label: snakeskin-, Xerox-, and typewriter aesthetics.
Label 1 features the English flag (Patrik Fitzgerald), while Label 2 displays the Alternative Tentacles logo (Jello Biafra). The record is available in two versions: black and “joke-figure-orange".
